What is Life to a SouthSider?
A preoccupation with the grid and permanence, or the miracle of the moment? Each day here on King Drive she crosses paths with other people like her: women who are moms or single but always bearing the weight of possibility, determined to navigate through a seemingly benign environment to find hidden blessings or take possession of joy wherever they seek it—in themselves or something bigger than themselves….
Living in the city, on the South Side of Chicago specifically, offers a unique perspective. It's a place where the hustle never stops and the beauty of life is often hidden in plain sight. You have to look a little closer, pay attention to the nuances, in order to see it. It might be that which gives you hope for an urban future....In this way some days feel expansive, while others feel constricted. But that's life on the South Side.
The South Side of Chicago is a place where community and family are important, and where the beauty of life is often hidden in plain sight. Writer explores the importance of the arts and community in her hometown.

Only the Best
Romantic love, platonic love, familial love, love between friends—all of these types of relationships can spark our imaginations as writers because they bring complexity into human-human romanticized scenarios so many fall into at times. They are conduits for exposing all the messy realities of relationships: beauty and ugliness; hope and despair; kindness and cruelty.
At their best, these poems can make us feel like we are not alone in the world. They remind us that somebody, somewhere, has been through what we are going through. They give us empathy and hope.
The relationships we have with others can be a source of inspiration. Whether it's exploring the beauty and ugliness of love, or exposing the messy realities of relationships, these poems make us feel less alone in the world.
